Ethiopian Coffee Varieties: Yirgacheffe vs Sidamo vs Guji vs Harrar
Ethiopian coffee isn’t one taste but a spectrum: Yirgacheffe is floral and citrusy, Sidamo fruity and full, Guji sweet and complex, Harrar wild and chocolatey. Which to choose depends on what you want in the cup.
In coffee’s birthplace, altitude, microclimate, and processing give each region its own identity:
| Region | Altitude | Flavor Profile | Best Brew |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yirgacheffe | 1,700–2,200 m | Floral, bergamot, lemon, tea-like body | V60, filter |
| Sidamo | 1,500–2,200 m | Fruity, blackberry, balanced body | Filter, French press |
| Guji | 1,800–2,300 m | Tropical fruit, peach, sweet finish | V60, AeroPress |
| Harrar | 1,500–2,100 m | Wild blueberry, chocolate, spice | Espresso, cezve |
Yirgacheffe: Ethiopia’s most famous region. Washed lots are crystal-clean, tea-bodied, with bergamot-lemon aromatics — clearest in a V60 (see our V60 guide).
Sidamo: A broader region with a fuller body; blackberry and red-fruit tones make it the most balanced daily cup.
Guji: The rising star of specialty coffee; natural processing brings peach and tropical sweetness.
Harrar: Eastern Ethiopia’s dry zone; naturally processed beans taste wild, winey, chocolatey — perfect for espresso and Turkish coffee.
